Backwoods

One of old pre-war radioactive waste depots, situated at the top of a rocky massif. It is inhabited by a group of squatters originating from New Mexico, who fled their home because of raiders. They for generations try, as much as possible, to grow just enough food to not starve. Even though Backwood's people spend all their short lives working, keeping farms at this extremely dry, contaminated soil, not paying hush money and surviving for more than thirty years is considered to be the highest achievement anybody can reach. Locals don't really know much about the outer world.

Backwoods is hero's place of birth. As John Garrett says, "it is not much, but it is home".

Chewelah

Poor colony full of toads, lies along a Route 160 leading from east Arizona to Utah. The settlement was established years ago by people who, lead by Troy Chewelah, left Vault 10. Unfortunately, their old plans of ideal democratic society didn’t last long against the rush of filthiness from the desert. Chewelah was after a while divided into two groups, hostile towards each other: those, who still believe in old ideals and newcomers, who don’t mind seeing the colony fall apart.

One corner of the town is occupied by a closed, prospering community of traditional families, that tries to follow old habits, ideas and rituals. They keep last technologies from the Vault as relics. It is very probable that this place will be conquered by the wasteland sooner or later, no matter what they do.

Geckon Falls

Relatively big and dangerous city, spread at both sides of Grand Canyon. The city is divided in the same manner into two spheres of influence - one ruled by the Slavers and one by an organization quite similar to pre-war Mafia, called Black Fist. The bigger, southern bank, lies near remains of an old highway and a scrap yard (full of cars). Of course, the surrounding area is full of geckons - even extensive hunting doesn’t help to reduce their numbers.

Despite the rivalry between the gangs, there has never been an open war, mostly thank to a constant threat of an attack of Vipers, whose homeland is still, after 40 years of raids, unknown. Ratpig duels, slavery and throwing witnesses down the canyon is a standard behaviour.

The Cinders

Partially still alive, but mostly burned remnants of a bigger postwar settlement - New Arizona. It was wiped off by the Vipers and other barbarian tribes fourteen years ago. Ruins of the city are ruled by ex-slaver and man hunter Herron. He is supported by a small number of survivors and people, who have no other place to go. At some point, Cinders may play an important role, or be totally forgotten.

The city was built at a tableland and thus survived for a long time – it was somewhat a symbol, Babylon of Arizona. However, raiders weren't bothered by the city culture.

Boulder City

Sometimes called the “Land of standing rocks”. Bizarre part of America, nature's playground. Anasazi Indians live here and stubbornly defend their homes. They lead a tribal war with Navahos, who are viewed as newcomers from the west. The boulder area doesn't to be struck by the war. Aside from the Indians, somewhat strange fauna and flora survived too. The player can teach Anasazi about their bloody history of old devastating family wars and make them stop the conflict against relatives.
